Located 8 kilometers north of Ubud, the Tegalalang rice terraces are the most visually striking example of Bali's ancient subak irrigation system — a UNESCO-recognized water management method that has shaped Balinese rice cultivation for over a thousand years. The terraces cascade down a deep valley, each paddy field at a different level, fed by an intricate network of channels and bamboo pipes.
The best viewpoints are along the ridge road that runs parallel to the valley — cafés and restaurants compete for the prime spots, many offering swings, photo platforms and instagram-friendly props for a fee. Arrive before 8:30am to beat the tour buses. The most authentic experience is walking down into the valley itself, through the paddies, during the golden hour before sunset when the light turns warm and the tour groups have departed.
